Why Can't Good Works Save Us?
Some of the most wonderful words in the Bible are “but God” (Ephesians 2:4). In Ephesians 2, the apostle Paul teaches what we explained above. He uses different terms, but they are the same truths. He says we are spiritually dead because of our sin (Ephesians 2:1), and that this is the direction of the whole world (Ephesians 2:3-4). God’s anger at our evil and sin is so serious and permanent that he describes us as ‘children of wrath’. But then we see these wonderful words, “but God”.
(Ephesians 2:4-5): “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ”.
God has an abundance of mercy. He has provided a way for us to not receive the punishment we deserve. We can do nothing to pay the debt we owe. We cannot earn acceptance with God.
